Kobe has lived up to expectations, Fisher says January 19th, 2010, 5:15 pm by JANIS CARR, OCREGISTER.COM EL SEGUNDO Derek Fisher closed eyes and thought about what 25,000 points would look like and unfortunately his image didn’t pop up. He is about 16,000 points shy of that mark. There’s only one player he knows that is close to that milestone and it’s Kobe Bryant. The Lakers star needs just 19 points to reach the 25,000-point mark, a feat that has been accomplished by only 14 other NBA players.

“What he’s accomplished is hard to put into words,” said Fisher, who has seen probably 20,000 of those points. “I think, the part about him that separates him from just about everybody is, to me, that he is one of the few guys who is doing what he is supposed to be doing.” Fisher said that former Lakers GM Jerry West was the first person to predict greatness for the guard when he signed him as a high school player out of Lower Merion High in Philadelphia and Bryant has lived up to expectations. “He’s actually done them (expectations), accomplished it, maybe even surpassed it in some people’s view and yet he still has room to go,” Fisher said. “Those are types of images that come to my mind – what he has accomplished in his career and yet he still continues to push himself.”

Bryant, 31, looks at that number and sees something different, a little less spectacular. “That’s a lot of work, a lot of consistency, a lot fortune in staying healthy,” Bryant said. “The situation I came into, I learned how to come off the bench, be a benchwarmer and then a starter. So I think the ups and downs helped me … all those experiences have helped me get to this point.”

Bryant, who is sure to top that mark during the Lakers’ two-week eastern trip, practiced Tuesday despite getting his broken finger whacked during Monday’s victory against Orlando.
