Dark Secrets: What Taiwan Athletes Face | THE UGLY TRUTH BEHIND THE SCENES
(不能說的秘密:台灣運動員群像 l 舞台背後的醜陋真相 )
丁妹有附英文逐字稿,再看誰有空幫她翻成中文
For Taiwanese athletes who have the dreams to compete at higher levels, it is at times “nightmares” to face the sports associations in Taiwan. Here, every sport has a different association, for example there is Swimming association, Volleyball association, Track and Field association......etcetera. All sports associations have extreme power over the athletes and coaches. They are the only organization in charge of team selections including Olympics and all international competitions. However, in majority of times, the team selections do not have clear selection criteria’s and are usually not done under fair conditions.
Taiwan sports associations can select an athlete simply because the athlete is somehow in favor. Maybe the athlete’s father is from the association, maybe the athlete’s coach is a friend of the association, maybe the athlete somehow pays the association in a kind of way. The sad part is, no athlete dares to stand up to this. If an athlete does anything that violates the association, or does anything that is not in the associations favor, they can ban the athlete forever by simply never selecting the athlete for competition again, or they can take away anything they can, including sponsorships, jobs, or more. While many people choose to be silent about this, some athletes and coaches needs to “play by the game” and “kiss the association’s ass and be the association’s pet” in order to benefit, or simply survive.
No matter how “evil” the association is, no one can do anything about it. Even if you have passion and profession, due to the law, you still cannot be part of, or enter the association unless they like you and they let you. Some people have been in charge of the association for over 20 years and are still sitting there.
“Why do these people stay in the position and do these evil things?”
Well, the sport associations are not only in charge of team selections. They also take heaps of funding money from the government and the Taiwan society. With the funded money, they can buy sports gear from any company they want at any price, they can rent out sports properties at a monopoly price since they’re the only organization in the country anyway, they can apply for more money by saying they need to hold competitions or they “need to help out athletes”. And what makes it easier for them, is that applying for money is so simple, they only need to put down numbers on an A4 paper, or just get a receipt from anywhere, and it doesn’t even have to be accurate.
You might ask: “Why can’t the Taiwan government do anything about this?” Well, they can. If, they want to. The organization that is in charge of ALL sports associations is called the Sports Administration. But the weird part is, all the money, and all the decisions the individual sports associations make, are all under the Sports Administrations approval. So why does all this bad stuff still happen? The Sports Administration either don’t care, don’t have the ability to care, or, as many many people say, the Sports Administration, which is supposed to be in charge of the sports associations, instead, acts in collusion with them.
Last year, on the 30th of August, 2017, the Taiwan government has hailed the amendments of Taiwan’s National Sports Act. Basically, some major changes were (1) All people can now enter sports associations and have a right to vote and be voted for (2) Chairman and managers can only be re-elected once (3)All sports associations now need to be professionally financial approved (4) All sports associations needs to re-elect within 6 months. Many people including coaches and athletes view this as a chance for change.
Now, it is the end of February 2018, which is also the time that all sports associations need to be re-elected. For the past 6 months, many sports associations have done different acts trying to maintain their power, or stop the change. Even though there is still a re-election, all election policies are made by the old force of sport associations. They have procrastinated the release of election constitutions on purpose, they have sought out politicians on their side, they have made things extremely difficult for the reformation teams, what’s worse, many signs are showing that they have been bribing votes, illegally exchanging information, and still “dominating” the elections despite all the corruption.
All of what I just said, doesn’t just happen on the highest level of sports. It exists everywhere, from National teams to school teams, leaving almost everyone, from high level athletes to young developers, suffering in the environment of Taiwan. Despite the hardship that already comes with the sport, athletes in Taiwan have to face more difficult, complicated, and helpless situations that hold them back. Athletes in Taiwan are hoping for a better environment. They’re hoping for resources for better performance, they’re hoping for people who really care about their welfare, they’re hoping for a society that treats them as assets, not tools. Athletes in Taiwan are hoping for the most basic element in sports : A fair game.
