緊接著Lewis Hamilton將在2013年轉入Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team的消息，被取代的Michael Schumacher也在日前宣佈，將在今年賽季之後退休；這是他繼2006年首度退休、2010年復出之後的第二度退休。
在目前，這位曾經叱吒賽車世界的前車王，已經高齡43歲，在一級方程式車手當中已經算是長青組了，因此未來再復出的可能性也不高；回顧以往，他已經累積了多達7次世界冠軍，除了是當代最強的鬥士之外，也已確定經是賽車世界中，不滅的名人。

關於這次退休，Michael Schumacher表示他已經考慮了一段時間，由於不確定自己是不是還有足夠的幹勁與體力，因此在沒有絕對把握的狀況下，最後還是決定退出F1賽車世界。(Already during the past weeks and months I was not sure if I would still have the motivation and energy which is necessary to go on)(and it is not my style to do anything which I am not 100% convinced about)

當然有車迷會對他這三年在Mercedes的表現不如預期提出質疑，針對這個部分，Michael Schumacher則自認已經有水準以上的演出，並持續在前段班熬戰；特別是據他表示，Mercedes車隊並沒有提供戰力足夠的賽車。(This is something that makes me proud, and this is part of why I never regretted my comeback. I can be happy with my performance and the fact that I was continuously raising my game during the last three years)(It is without doubt that we did not achieve our goal to develop a world championship fighting car within those years)
